Shopping the 2027 Silverado 1500 against the Ram 1500 in Ontario, you meet a puzzle early: the biggest horsepower figure and the biggest towing rating sit on different trucks.
The Silverado holds the towing rating. It also offers four engines, including a segment-exclusive diesel and two next-generation V8s, plus a hands-free driving system that works while you tow.
Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 Side by Side

| 5.7 L V8 payload | 2,170 lbs (984 kg) | 1,150 lbs (521 kg); 1,680 lbs (762 kg) with eTorque |
| 5.7 L V8 output | 402 hp, 428 lb-ft | 395 hp, 410 lb-ft |

| Centre touchscreen | 16.3-inch, standard across the lineup | 14.5-inch, available |

| Top horsepower | 481 hp, 6.6 L V8 | 777 hp, 6.2 L supercharged HEMI V8 |
Towing Ratings and Payload by Engine
The Silverado’s 5.7 L V8 owns the highest tow rating in this matchup. Ram’s 5.7-litre HEMI V8 tows up to 8,890 lbs (4,032 kg), or 11,370 lbs (5,157 kg) with eTorque. The Silverado’s V8 of the same displacement tows well past both.
That rating does not come with the Silverado’s highest payload. The 2.7 L TurboMax holds that title at 2,340 lbs (1,061 kg) and tows up to 9,400 lbs (4,264 kg). Ram’s 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 eTorque matches the payload, but tows up to 8,100 lbs (3,674 kg).
The 5.7 L V8 gives up 170 lbs (77 kg) of payload for the biggest trailer rating. Maximums shift with cab, drivetrain, trim and packages, so the right engine depends on what you pull and what rides in the bed.
Horsepower Does Not Set the Towing Number
Ram posts the biggest peak output: 540 hp from the Hurricane HO twin-turbo I6 and 777 hp from the supercharged HEMI V8. Those trucks tow up to 9,480 lbs (4,300 kg) and 8,580 lbs (3,892 kg), with payload ratings of 1,530 lbs (694 kg) and 1,140 lbs (517 kg).
The Silverado’s 6.6 L V8 makes 481 hp and 501 lb-ft, the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class. It tows up to 9,700 lbs (4,400 kg), more than the Hurricane HO, though the HO does hold a torque edge at 521 lb-ft.
The 6.6 L V8’s 1,510 lbs (685 kg) payload is the lowest in the Silverado lineup. It suits a driver who wants big V8 power and tows a mid-weight trailer, while heavier cargo loads point to the 5.7 L V8 or the TurboMax.
The Duramax Diesel for Long Highway Trips

The Duramax 3.0 L Turbo-Diesel is segment-exclusive, and it makes 305 hp and 495 lb-ft. Smooth, quiet operation and strong low-end torque are its calling cards for towing and long-distance driving. A 129 L fuel tank is listed as available with the Duramax, the 5.7 L V8 and the 6.6 L V8.
Ram’s Hurricane SO makes 420 hp, but the Duramax answers with more torque, 495 lb-ft against 469 lb-ft. It also tows up to 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg), which is 470 lbs (213 kg) above Ram’s best rating.
Payload is a near tie: 1,870 lbs (848 kg) for the Duramax and 1,880 lbs (853 kg) for the Hurricane SO. Ten pounds is small next to 470 lbs (213 kg) more trailer.
Hands-Free Towing and Trailer Technology
Super Cruise brings hands-free driving to towing on equipped Silverados, and a three-year plan is included. No other truck in its class offers a hands-free driving system with trailering capability.
Ram offers Hands-free Driving Assist (L2+) on the RHO and TRX SRT, both high-performance trucks. Ram also lists a digital rearview mirror with tow mode and trailer reverse steering control. Blind-spot Monitoring with Trailer Tow Detection and power trailer-tow mirrors round out the set.
That is a thorough toolkit, but the Silverado is the one that takes hands-free driving along when a trailer is hitched. On ZR2 and High Country, a rear camera mirror comes standard as well.
Screens and Cockpit Tech
Every 2027 Silverado 1500 carries a 16.3-inch centre display and a 12.2-inch driver information centre, both standard across the lineup. Ram’s 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen is an available upgrade, and it is smaller.
ZR2 and High Country add an 11.5-inch front passenger screen with a head-up display. Ram counters with a 10.25-inch passenger screen and a 23-speaker Klipsch system, but the Silverado’s passenger screen is larger.
Dual wireless charging is available on the Silverado, and a reconfigurable Multi-Flex centre console adds storage. Ram’s RamBox bed storage and active-leveling air suspension are real draws, yet the towing ratings and hands-free trailering above are what decide a towing purchase, and the Silverado leads both.
Why the Silverado 1500 Fits Ontario Drivers

Match the engine to the trailer and the trip:
- Heaviest trailers: the 5.7 L V8, with the highest tow rating of either truck.
- Long highway hauls: the Duramax diesel, for torque, a 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg) rating and an available 129 L tank.
- Mixed towing and hauling: the 2.7 L TurboMax, with 350 hp, 455 lb-ft and the Silverado’s top payload.
- V8 power for lighter trailers: the 6.6 L V8, at 481 hp.
The 10-speed automatic comes with every engine, and Super Cruise trailering adds hands-free driving on top.
Choosing the 2027 Silverado 1500 for Your Towing Plans
Four engines, the highest tow rating of the two trucks, a segment-exclusive diesel and hands-free towing make the Silverado 1500 the stronger answer for Ontario trailer owners. It is expected to go on sale at the end of 2026.
